Masking a digi and paper tole tutorial
Ever since the Prairie Fairy Queen created the Hoisting Sails and Harbor Gulls images I have wanted to create this card. Today's tutorial will show you how to mask a digi and using paper tole techniques how to give your images depth.
Print out the image you plan to use on cardstock as well as computer paper. Cut out the computer paper pieces you want to mask.
Using dotto adhesive place this adhesive onto the backs of the computer paper boats and line up on your cardstock with the same image.
Here's a pic of the cardstock with the masks in place.
I then used a large post it note to define my horizon.
Flip the post it note on the horizon line to now cover the sky. This allows you to sponge the water I used Marina Mist in the center and Night of Navy Stampin Up ink to sponge the water. I also sponged a little bit of Pink Pirouette down on the sides of the image to soften the break line.
I printed out 5 images of Harbor Gulls all the same size. I numbered the right top corner so you would understand the layering effect better. Color your images. You will see that I colored less of the image when it became more of the foreground. I also placed red X's where I planned on cutting out that part of the image to show depth. To decide how to do this look at your image and start by removing the object that is farthest back.
In image 2 I will be removing the back wing of the sea gull in the background so I Xed it out and didn't bother to color it.
Image 3 I cut out the back wing and the body of the background seagull.
In image 4 I removed the entire background seagull and the pillar upon which it was perched.
In image 5 I removed the back wing on the foreground sea gull, I could have removed the tail feathers but didn't think of it. Also even though I colored both legs and the top of the pillar I decided later that they would be better removed.
Now I am giving you the view of image 1 and 2 side by side to see that the back wing is removed from the image when cut.
Image 2 and 3 show the difference by removing the background birds back wing and body cut out.
Images 3 and 4 show the difference of the next removal.
I pointed out the parts I removed with pink arrows on images 4 and 5.
Whenever I do paper tole I like to add real elements to the images for more depths. I added hemp for the ropes on images 3 and 5. To add it to image 3, I had to cut a slot on the side of the front pillar to slide the hemp through. I did three different pieces of hemp, I didn't wrap it around so it wouldn't distort my image by having it too taught. I adhered the hemp using glue dots.
Use a round tool, either the edge of a marker, an embosser, or something similar to give the images curvature. This keeps it from looking flat and adds dimension. Do this on everyone of the 5 gull images.
To adhere the gulls to each other I didn't want to use pop dots they make the spacing too much. In paper tole you use a silicone adhesive, as I live in the sticks, I went to the local hardware store and asked them what they had that would work. It turns out that the window caulking is a clear silicone adhesive and much cheaper than at a craft store. It comes with a nozzle tip so much easier for fine detailed work. Squeeze out a dollop of adhesive several places on the furthest back image making sure not to put adhesive on the area removed of the next layer. The depth you want is dependent on how much adhesive you add, you can always squish it down, just be careful not to put your adhesive near the edge or it will squish out.
Nozzle tip
Close up shot for you to see adhesive added to image. Let dry for a minute or two between layers so that your image doesn't slide around. It doesn't take long for the adhesive to set. Continue to do this on each layer.
Side view of two images joined.
Side view of all 5 images joined, you can now see how much difference it would have made if I used pop dots on each layer.
Front view of all 5 layers adhered together.
I attached my image to my card and then added my gulls with more silicone adhesive. I had a little excess of my gulls hanging off the bottom of my card. I just trimmed it level.

Sweet Eskimo Kisses
Well my newest post is using no black lines again with Siku and Shiya from Mo's Digital Pencil. I found this one totally different as I had to color in their hair when it would normally have shown up with the black lines and I really haven't done that many guys hair. I do like how the folds turned out in the girl's coat. Hope you like it!

Spring Fling MW Reminder at Fairy Fun Fridays
Golfer Lewis is the focal point of my card for Fairy Fun Fridays midweek reminder Spring Fling. I think the beret through me off and I was thinking of the Dr. Kinsley image, because I made Lewis look like a doctor that was golfing before his rounds. Needless to say the accents are circles, I ran the white ones through the Big Shot with the Swiss Dots embossing folder to give the circles a golf ball divot look. On the inside of my card, I stamped the greeting first and ran it through the same embossing folder. Check out Prairie Fairy Designs and find the perfect image for you to work with, heck who can stop at one! Enter the Fairy Fun Fridays challenge and get a chance at some freebies!

I colored this stamp with my Stampin Up markers and then stamped it on my paper. I then went over it with a Versamarker and put clear embossing powder on it. Pyramage Decoupage tutorial
I saw some really cool cards out there called pyramage decoupage which stands for pyramid decoupage. Still lost, decoupage is the art or technique of decorating something with cut-outs of paper, linoleum, plastic, or other flat material over which varnish or lacquer is applied. Basically layering the image to create depth. When I went to explore it further I discovered there are sites out there where you can order the images pre-colored and set just for cutting out and layering. Well I never like to do anything simple, so I thought it would be neat to create with this style but not be limited to the company colors and/or shapes, so I put a twist to it using the Prairie Fairy Designs image So Sweet. Follow the tutorial to see how easily you can do this with whichever image and shapes you choose.
1. Color two images the exact same way. I chose colors that would match my background paper.
3. Adhere them to patterned paper, I used two sheets as the pattern wasn't repetitious and I wanted them to match exactly.
4. I chose Nestabilities scallop ovals as my cut outs. I layered them on one of the images to see how I wanted my layout to be. You will see that two of the die cuts are face down and two are face up. I cut the inner circle and the third circle at the same time. The placement of the other two dies allowed me to see the spacing needed. I removed them before running the image through my Big Shot. Hint: When doing this I did it on my Big Shot cutting mats so they wouldn't shift by moving the paper to the machine.
5. Here are the results of cutting out the inner circle and the third circle at the same time.
6. Next you will take your second image on your cutting mat. I layed the inner circle that was cut out on top of the image so I would be able to line up the scallops for the 2nd and 4th circle die cuts to be placed correctly. On the second picture, I took a close up and pointed it out with the pink arrow for you to see what I mean.
7. I have lined up all of the cut out pieces for you to see the pieces I am working with.
8. I attached pop dots on the inner circle of the largest circle. I only have about 1/2 of the pop dot on the paper as I didn't want it showing on the next layer. Line up the next largest circle with the image and adhere to the pop dots.
9. Attached second layer.
10. Repeat step 8 on the inner part of the third largest circle, you will need less pop dots on each layer.
11. Line up and attach second layer.
12. For the top layer I attached the pop dots to the back of the top layer as I didn't have an inner cut out to use as a gauge.
13. Line up and attach top layer.
Here is the view from the side.
14. Finish as you desire and add to your card front.
I would love to see what you create with this technique, please send me a link so I can see your creations.
